The FHWA’s foundational guidebook on traffic control devices is set to get a face lift. Last published in 2009 with a 2012 revision, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD) will soon be updated to include innovations that improve safety and efficiency (such as variable speed limits, dynamic lane control, and rapid-flashing pedestrian beacons). New to this edition will be technologies and approaches to accommodate automated vehicles and highway connectivity.

Opportunities to provide public input on the proposed updates will be available in Spring 2019.
