University Transportation Consortium Wins Grant Re-competition
UVA's Center for Transportation Studies (CTS), a partnering institution of the Mid-Atlantic Universities Transportation Center (MUATC) consortium, has been awarded a grant of $1.0 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). The total amount of the grant is $6.2 million and will support the consortium’s research activities into 2010.
The Center for Transportation Studies has been an active member of the consortium since 1988 and has conducted many research projects, which have resulted in technical reports, seminar presentations, and published journal articles. In addition to federal funds, CTS also receives state matching funds annually from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for the support of the MAUTC program.
According to Dr. Lester A. Hoel, the director of CTS and the principal investigator of the grant, MAUTC's research, education, and technology transfer activities draw on a broad range of areas within the framework of the consortium’s mission to address regional and national transportation issues. Other CTS faculty members who have research involvement in the MAUTC grant include Drs. Michael Demetsky, Nicholas J. Garber, Brian Park, and Brian Smith. The research program has supported over 126 graduate and undergraduate students since its inception.
The theme of the program is: Technology for Integrated Transportation Systems Operation and Performance. UVA together with its partners conduct research in areas that address statewide transportation issues as well as the national strategic USDOT objectives of safety, mobility, global connectivity, environmental stewardship, and security.
Other MAUTC partnering institutions include the University of Maryland, Virginia Polytechnic and State University, West Virginia University and Pennsylvania State University, which is the lead institution for this consortium.
