The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia invites applications to fill a Professional Research Staff Position as a Research Associate.
The focus of the position is research in the area of sustainable mobility with an emphasis on emerging transportation trends and technologies. The candidate selected for this position will be responsible for developing models and methods to assess the operations and impacts of shared self-driving vehicles in urban settings, including strategies for ridesharing and pricing. The candidate selected will also publish research papers, submit research proposals, assist with training graduate students, and manage the research team. The applicant will work in a dynamic research environment with the opportunity to collaborate across multiple projects within this research theme.
Requirements: Candidates must possess an earned Doctorate in Civil Engineering (emphasis in Transportation Engineering), Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, or another closely related field by hire date. Ideal candidates will have a strong programming background and an interest in sustainable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications: The following characteristics are sought in an ideal candidate: proficiency in C++, familiarity with graph theory, and experience with agent-based models. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of publishing within these domains: Transportation Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, or another closely related field.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will be to research and write literature reviews, conceptualize and write work plans, conduct field and laboratory experiments, perform analytical studies, analyze data, write research reports, and present research findings. The candidate will receive instructions on project objectives, feedback on proposed research plans, and project logistics from principal investigators and project managers. The candidate may supervise or coordinate the work of graduate research assistants, students, technicians, and others in executing projects and activities related to transportation structures and materials.
The position is open immediately and the initial appointment will be for 12 months with possible renewals depending on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance of the candidate.
